About Marguerite BARANKITSE
Marguerite “Maggy” Barankitse was born in 1957 in Ruyigi, eastern Burundi.
Orphaned by her father at age six, she was raised in a home built on solidarity and inclusion.
In October 1993, ethnic violence in Burundi led to a massacre she narrowly survived.
Despite being Tutsi, she risked her life to save 25 children, hiding them from attackers.
That traumatic moment became the catalyst for Maison Shalom, that offers shelter, education, health care, and dignity to orphans and vulnerable youth.
To date, the organization has transformed the lives of over 50,000 children. Its mission extends to sustainable development, reconciliation, and community healing. Maison Shalom is now based in Rwanda and celebrates 32 years of impact in 2025.
Maggy emphasizes forgiveness over revenge, and love over hate.
She has received 34 honors worldwide, including two Burundian presidential medals. Notable awards include UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award (2005), Chirac Foundation Prize for Conflict Prevention (2011), Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity (2016).
Several books detail her journey, including Love Made Me an Inventor and La haine n’aura pas le dernier mot.
Maggy is often called the “National Mum” of Burundi for her maternal leadership. Her life is a testament to how one woman’s courage and compassion can heal a nation. She remains a global symbol of peacebuilding, resilience, and unconditional love.
